Floods! We're being DoS'd from time to time. This means additional restrictions have had to be enacted to fight this. I have firewalled apparently abusive IP addresses so if someone you know has issues accessing the site email me immediately. I have also disabled CGI on accounts that are lagging out due to comment spam from spambots. The DoS is accomplished mostly through comment spam and requests for CGI scripts that do not quickly finish or have security flaws. If you have one of these in your account, its CGI has been disabled. I don't blame you and I'm not angry about it, I just need this stuff fixed guys, that's all. Pop on the support channel IRC chat and we can talk it out if you think you've got it fixed, or just shoot me an email. Sorry for the problems, but we have to ensure operation for ourselves and everyone else, and these are the necessary steps. Once the DoS subsides Posted by travis on Sun Jun 24 11:27:53 CDT 2007 Update! I haven't posted to this in _ages_. Stuff is going just fine. Our mailserver was down for precisely 6 hours unexpectedly when an HD failed. Nothing was lost, only the root drive failed, all mail is backed up using RAID mirroring. Also, we're still accepting new accounts, but we may lag up to a week or two when processing, we're _SWAMPED_ with new account requests, so give us some time, we'll get to you :) Posted by travis on Mon Jul 17 15:27:51 CDT 2006 Dissonance and Harmony Over the past few weeks we have been bogged down with user requests so we have become somewhat laggy in our responses, I appologize for this and we are working as fast as we can and should be caught up soon. Besides this problem, our services are all continuing to run perfectly and we are in peak condition. I have recently come upon some additional funding I am going to use to purchase some more equipment for the NOC and enhance our services soon hopefully. We'll see how things go. Our IRC network we sponser is setup as well, check it out! ECnet is based upon two of our servers along with three or four others from various parts of the world. In any event, we will continue to provide what we have, cheap as free hosting for those who need it. Why? Because we're fools :). Nah, because it's the right thing to do (tm). In any event, that concludes my update for you guys. Posted by travis on Sun Jul 24 17:38:51 CDT 2005 Been A Long Month Hey everybody, it's your favorite system administrator here to give you an update of what's going on here at TravisBSD, as well as a long overdue explanation. Some of you may have noticed that over the past month to a month and a half the staff here haven't been able to keep up with user requests and job tickets. The senior members of the staff have been undergoing problems in personal lives. Ben, our senior technician, moved recently. I have another job which I am holding down doing part time server administrtion. And we have had one of our less senior technicians leave. This led to the several day to week delay a few of you experienced this month. This is not a good excuse. For this 'ignoring' period, I appologize, but this time is now over. We have some new members which will be joining our staff to help us maintain this, as well as a host of new features which should be ready by the new year. Among these are an account control panel, installation of several VPS servers upon which users may have their own 'root' enviornment, as well as an increase in the number of pool webservers. So that's all for now, resend your requests and we'll get them done. Thanks for your patience! Posted by travis on Fri Dec 10 07:54:20 UTC 2004 Architecture Upgrades Recently we have performed several critical steps to fully stabalize our architecture, as you may have read previously. In this short news posting I will summarize the changes that will be taking place to improve this even further. This is just the beginning. Everything should take little or no uptime away, and there will be advanced warning before any downtime. 1) Network Upgrades - New switches, routers, and wireless access equipment 2) Core Upgrades - Revisement of the UPS auto-shutdown procedure as well as several other emergency subsystems. This will include finishing the installation of generator. 3) Server Upgrades - Revisement of several key core components to provide even more enhanced stability than that which currently exists. 4) Personal Enhancements - In other words, the admins demand a mini fridge! =) These upgrades should occur in this order and shouldn't begin for several months. This upgrade cycle is a long way away, but it will be quite beneficial when finished. If you have any questions or comments about these upgrades or anything else, please contact team@travisbsd.org and one of us will be more than happy to assist you or answer questions. Posted by travis on Fri Sep 17 20:53:11 GMT 2004 Upgrade Time! Midnight I'm ugrading about half of the subsystems and making our infastructure more reliable (again). This will involve enabling a replicating LDAP server in case we lose the first, enabling my half terrabyte RAID storage system. This server will act as a backup system to allow networked storage of backups and other files. Not only this, but Noodle has now been equipped with a new security system, the MAC framework. We will be rebooting noodle around 1 am tomorrow morning to allow the MAC framework to initialize and give us additional security controls over the machine. We will also be taking this time to swap in better and new networking equipment into place to replace the old equipment which has been keeping us up for so long. So if you're up late tonight, please be patient with us as we act to make these changes. If you have any additional questions about these changes, plese email the team and we can discuss any concerns you may have. Posted by travis on Sat Aug 21 10:35:10 GMT 2004 Server Upgrades After a final critical security alert that required a reboot of Noodle, we decided since we already lost our almost 100 day uptime that we would go ahead and do a complete patch/upgrade process, as well as an upgrade of all our other software which has become out of date. So everything has now been updated, the server has been rebooted twice within the last 48 hours, so if you noticed an outage that was probably it. I have been receiving periodic reports of MySQL problems, I believe i have resolved these, if anyone has anymore problems please contact me as soon as possible and I will get them resolved from my end. Thank you for your patience during our upgrades. Posted by travis on Fri Jul 2 09:31:48 GMT 2004 |
